Backcountry walking and hiking opportunities in Glen
Canyon National Recreation Area are well-kept secrets,
for there are few marked trails through this
spectacular and unexploited area. Remote and
challenging routes lead to an exhilerating experience,
with fascinating arches, canyons, prehistoric sites, or
sweeping vistas to explore.

RECOMMENDED HIKES
ESCALANTE CANYONS
Access to this area is by boat or from trailheads
along Hole-in-the-Rock Road southeast of Escalante.
These canyons are popular for their easy streambed
hikes as well as slickrock formations.
WIREGRASS CANYON
Wiregrass is accessable by Hwy. 277 east of Utah Hwy
12. This area was just discovered about six years ago.
It's about a three-mile hike with a small natural arch
one mile in the backcountry.
LEES FERRY
Several hikes are accessible from Lees Ferry
vicinity. These hikes can range anywhere from 1 mile to
34 miles. The River Trail starts just upriver
from the historic fort. You can buy a self-guiding
booklet at the fort, it interpets different features
you may see during your hike. The Spencer Trail
is a strenuous 1,500-foot climb which gives you a great
view of Lees Ferry. For the hikers that mean business,
there is a 34-mile trail through Paria Canyon Primitive
Area. This hike requires a permit from the Bureau of
Land Management Office in Kanab, Utah.
ORANGE CLIFFS AREA
This area offers great hiking and camping. Access is
through Hite on Flint Trail(a great area for hiking and
mountain biking). For more information, contact the NPS
